GLIMMERGLASS OPERA TO PRESENT MUSICAL AND THEATRICAL TRIBUTE TO
WENDY WASSERSTEIN IN NEW YORK CITY
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – In honor of Wendy Wasserstein’s contributions to the arts and the world of opera, Glimmerglass Opera will present “An Uncommon Woman: A Celebration of Wendy Wasserstein and Music” on Tuesday, November 28, at the Colony Club in New York City from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The evening will feature readings by Emmy Award-winning actresses Stockard Channing and Allison Janney, in addition to performances by alumni of Glimmerglass Opera’s acclaimed Young American Artists Program and members of the Mount Holyoke Chamber Singers.
Wasserstein, whose stage and film works have spoken to generations of women and to society at large, is best known for her award-winning plays, including The Heidi Chronicles, which won the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1989. Wasserstein also influenced the world of opera with her libretto for The Festival of Regrets, one of three one-act operas featured in the operatic trilogy Central Park, which was commissioned by Glimmerglass Opera and given its world premiere at the company’s Alice Busch Opera Theater in 1999.
The evening will feature readings by actresses Stockard Channing and Allison Janney, most recently known for their work on television’s The West Wing, as well as a screening of excerpts from Wasserstein’s The Festival of Regrets, and a performance of songs from Pamela’s First Musical by former Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artists soprano Monica Yunus and baritone Matthew Worth, accompanied by pianist Djordje Nesic. Pamela’s First Musical is a musical Wasserstein adapted from her children’s book of the same name in collaboration with composer Cy Coleman and lyricist David Zippel. The acclaimed Chamber Singers of Mount Holyoke College, Wasserstein’s alma mater, will also perform.
Tickets for the evening are available now. Premium tickets, which include priority seating, are $250. General admission tickets are $75 each. Premium ticket holders bringing their daughters should ask about special discounts.
Seating is limited. Reserve tickets early by calling (607) 547-0700, ext. 209. The Colony Club is located at 564 Park Avenue in New York City.
