inviteThe Cooperstown Art Association (CAA) is presenting an exhibit which celebrates the work of Henriette Simon “H.S.” Picker, the mother to An American Tragedy composer Tobias Picker.  Inspired by The Glimmerglass Festival’s production of An American Tragedy, “An American Artist: H.S. Picker at 97”  will open Wednesday, July 16, with an opening reception held  5-7 p.m. The exhibit will run through August 15 and will be held in Gallery B of the CAA. The opening reception, as well as the exhibit, is free to attend and open to the public. More information can be found at the CAA website.

H.S. Picker got her start in drawing while studying with Alexander Brook and Louis Bouché at the Art Student’s League of New York. After ending her studies at the age of 16, she entered into a career of designing high fashion women’s shoes for major brands such as l. Miller Shoes, Mademoiselle and Palizzio. Picker eventually ran her own shoe line, “Simone Shoes To Match”, with some of her designs being illustrated by Andy Warhol in the 1950s. Now at 97 years of age, Picker has not skipped a beat in generating new creative works—she has produced more than 100 in the past five years alone. Her pieces include landscapes and portraits, and have begun to enter distinguished private collections.

More information on H.S. Picker and a collection of her catalog works can be found at her websiteAn American Tragedy opens July 20 and runs through August 24 at The Glimmerglass Festival.
