Glimmerglass Opera is an internationally-acclaimed company that produces a yearly summer festival, consisting of four operas that run in repertory from the beginning of July to the end of August. In 2007, Glimmerglass’ season presents not only four new productions, but also a full-scale concert and film screening, each production depicting a unique interpretation of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. Nestled among the rolling hills of upstate New York on the shores of Otsego Lake, Glimmerglass Opera welcomes interns from all over the country every summer. Glimmerglass Opera’s reputable internship program provides the opportunity for young professionals and students to experience first hand the fast-paced, inspired, and magical world of opera. As an intern with Glimmerglass, you experience a unique combination of practical work and directed educational programs, each designed to further your professional growth. Interns work directly with noted professionals while under the guidance of supervisors and staff from many of the best theaters, opera companies, and schools in the nation. The work experience at Glimmerglass Opera is complemented by a variety of career-enhancing workshops, including resume and employment resources, taxes and financial planning, and careers in the arts. Join us for a summer and leave with a lifetime of meaningful contacts and opportunities. Glimmerglass Opera—Don’t Look Back… PRODUCTIONAudio/Video Engineering 2 positions. Late May/early June-Sept. 1. Assist with installation, use, and maintenance of in-house audio and video monitoring/playback systems, a large wired and wireless intercom system, and a computer-controlled projection system for projected titles. Requires experience with sound, video, intercom, and computer systems. Carpentry 1 position. Mid-late May-Aug. 4. Assist carpentry staff with construction of new scenery, alterations to scenery built by contract shops, and initial load-in. Welding experience preferred. Costume Construction-Stitcher 4 positions. Late May/early June-early/late July. Assist with construction and/or alteration of costumes for four operas. Requires theatrical sewing skills and academic shop experience. Professional experience desirable. Costume Construction- Crafts 1 position. Late May/early June-Aug. 4. Assist with craft work including dying, distressing, millinery, and footwear of costumes for four operas. Requires theatrical sewing skills and skill in one or more crafts areas. Professional experience desirable. Dramaturgy 1 position. June 11 - August 22. Provide research support for print materials, productions, lectures, and special programming; conduct, transcribe, and edit artist interviews for print and web publication; and assist with special programming. This position offers an opportunity to closely observe the rehearsal/production process and to interact with renowned artists and professionals. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong background in opera, music, and/or theater. Experience in preparing web pages is helpful, but not required. Electrics 5 positions. May 29/June 4-Sept. 1. Assist with installing, circuiting, and focusing 500+ unit plot; perform daily change-overs; run productions; and strike. Requires thorough experience with stage electrics. Hair & Makeup 1 position. June 25-Aug. 28. Assist with daily maintenance of wigs; pre-performance application of makeup, wigs, and hairstyling for singers; and backstage quick changes. Professional experience desired. A congenial and artist-oriented personality is essential. Production Administration 1 position. Early-mid May-Sept. 1. Assist the TD and all other non-costume shop heads with office routines, scheduling, shopping, and staff support including safety program implementation and crew meals. Requires basic knowledge of production procedures and terminology, computer literacy, and driver's license. Projected Titles 1 position. June 11-Aug. 28. Assist Titles Supervisor preparing scripts, scores, and presentation system for titled productions; attend some rehearsals and call titles for performances. Must be absolutely comfortable reading opera scores, detail-oriented, organized, and calm under pressure. General word processing and computer skills required; training on presentation software will be provided. Technical knowledge of projection equipment not required. Prop Construction 2 positions. Late May- June 29. Assist in prop shop with creation of properties for four operas. Requires thorough shop knowledge, ability to work independently, and skill in one or more shop areas (wood, soft goods, paint, crafts, etc.). Rigging 1 position. Mid-late May-Aug. 4. Assist rigging staff with the installation of hanging scenery and lighting equipment; maintenance and upgrades to rigging system. Requires good stage carpentry skills and basic knowledge of counterweight systems and rigging. Scene Design 1 position. May 21-Aug. 20. Assist scenic designers during technical rehearsal process with notes, research, and drafting. Also assist in prop or paint shop as needed. Requires attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a collaborative team. Experience with professional designers preferred. Scenic Painting 1 position. May 29-Aug. 4. Assist with in-house scenery and prop painting and with touch-ups and repaints of contract shop scenery. Excellent drawing, good layout, mixing, and scenic craft skills are required. Professional experience desirable. Stage Management 1 position. May 29-July 29. Assist with setting up, maintaining, and cleaning rehearsal halls; coordinating with shop heads and designers; overseeing and supervising the work of production rehearsal and running crews; and creating production books, scores, and inventories. Interns do not call shows, but must read music proficiently and have considerable academic stage management experience. Stage Operations 9 positions. Mid-late May-Sept. 1. Install repertory scenery; run deck, rail, and properties; perform daily scenery change-overs; build, install, and maintain rehearsal scenery and properties; strike scenery at the end of the season. Some interns will have performance opportunities as supernumeraries. This is an excellent introduction to most aspects of production and requires only a basic familiarity with stage procedures. Technical Direction 1 position. May 14-Sept. 1. Assist with the creation of working drawings for archive and rental purposes; cataloguing and tracking rehearsal scenery; and organizing production archive books. Will also draft updated production ground plans and small projects for scene shop. Requires good knowledge of scenery construction techniques. AutoCAD proficiency necessary. Wardrobe 4 positions. June 11-Sept. 1. Maintain large repertory costume inventory, dress principals and chorus, and assist with backstage quick changes. Interns also assist in costume shop for the first 2-3 weeks of the contract period and need basic theatrical sewing skills. A congenial and artist-oriented personality is essential. ADMINISTRATIONAccounting/Finance 1 position. Early May-late August. Assist Accounting/Finance Department with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. Participate in preparation of month-end financial reports, as well as general finance office administration. Accounting or business administration focus preferred. Requires strong computer skills including spreadsheet experience. Excellent filing skills a must. Development 2 positions. May 14- late August. Assist with creation, administration, and smooth execution of multiple summer fundraising programs including donor benefits program, special event weekends, internet fundraising research, VIP ticketing and accommodation, foundation proposal writing, private donor events, and office administration. Host donors at all pre-performance picnics, performances, VIP intermission clubs, and post-performance activities. Successful applicants will be energetic, fast-working, and highly computer literate with superior communication skills. General Administration 1 position. Late May-late August. Assist Office Manager in daily operations of administrative office. Duties include coordination of communication center, mail processing and distribution, reception duties, shipping and receiving, and assisting other administrative departments with special projects. Must have valid driver's license with clean record, congenial personality, excellent phone manner, and sense of humor. Knowledge of Microsoft Office helpful. House Management 1 position. May-late August. Solicit and schedule volunteer ushers; assist with orientations, creating signage, opening and closing the theater; assist House Manager with patron comfort and safety at all performances. Prior house management experience a plus. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Housing and Transportation 3 positions. April/May-late August. Assist in a highly visible administrative department responsible for the housing, transportation, and other practical concerns of singers, directors, designers, and general personnel. Must be able to deal positively and tactfully with a variety of logistical arrangements vital to the company's smooth functioning. Must be computer literate. Must be team-oriented, flexible, and energetic. Driver's license with clean driving record required. Marketing 1 position. June 4- late August. Assist the Marketing Department with preparation and distribution of season promotions, research, and analysis of ticket sales data. Help staff the audience services desk at all performances. Must have a close attention to detail, congenial public manner, and computer skills in Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of PhotoShop and InDesign or other desktop publishing software a plus. Operations Intern 1 position. May- late August. Assist with scheduling, recruiting, financial reporting, and general office administration and front-of-house operations. Occasional support to General and Artistic Director. Strong computer and communication skills. Photography Intern 1 position. June 4- late August. Assist professional company photographer in producing publicity and archival photographs of the season's productions; maintain photo files; photograph special events; help staff audience services desk. Proof of excellent photography skills required. Must be computer literate and possess a driver's license. Knowledge of Photoshop strongly recommended. Public Relations 1 position. June 4- late August. Assist the Public Relations Department with preparation and distribution of press materials, community outreach engagements, and dealings with members of the media and the general public. Help staff the audience services desk at all performances. Must have a close attention to detail, congenial public manner, excellent writing and proofreading skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign or other desktop publishing software a plus. Artistic AdministrationArtistic Administration 1 position. Mid April-late August. Assist Artistic Operations staff with copying, filing, data entry, and artist management. Assist music, Young American Artists Program, scheduling administration. Must possess a sense of humor, sound judgment, initiative, and excellent communication skills. Desired: Editing and computer skills. Music 2 positions. Mid May-late August. Assist researching and copying music; locating, hiring, and transporting instruments including heavy lifting; rehearsal room and orchestra pit set-up; attendance at orchestra rehearsals and performances. Must be reliable and flexible, with good interpersonal and organizational skills and a background in music. Driver's license required. Young American Artists Program Administration 2 positions. Mid May-late August. Live at Young Artists' residence. Assist with residence management; liaise with master class and audition personnel; schedule and provide transportation for Young Artists; produce programs and publicity materials for recitals and concerts; act as liaison between Young Artists and the Director of Artistic Operations. Excellent juggling skills with level-headedness under pressure a priority. Strong interpersonal, organizational skills allied with flexibility, reliability, and discretion. Also required: computer literacy and driver's license. Desired: publishing/editing computer skills.
