The Singer and the Song: A Cabaret Starring Deborah Voigt

Friday, July 29
Alice Busch Opera Theater
4:00 p.m.

This performance will be the premiere of a program developed by Deborah Voigt, director Francesca Zambello and award-winning playwright Terrence McNally.

"Vocal recitals are personal, intimate affairs. The singer faces the audience without the familiar trappings of the theater. There is no orchestra, no character, no make-believe. There is only the singer and the song. It is an opportunity to know them not as Carmen or Siegfried, but as themselves. Everything is revelatory, but especially the program they have chosen. What do they want to tell us with their choice of repertory? What does it tell us about them?

These are some of the questions Deborah Voigt, Francesca Zambello and I will ask and try to answer in The Voigt Project. It will begin with Karen Carpenter's Let Me Sing. We don't know yet where it will end."

– Terrence McNally

Concert Starring Nathan Gunn

Nathan Gunn will perform a concert accompanied by his wife, Julie Gunn. Mr. Gunn made his Glimmerglass debut in Francesca Zambello’s production of Iphigenia in Tauris in 1997 and returned for a highly praised performance in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia in 2001. He has appeared in internationally renowned opera houses such as the Met, San Francisco Opera, Seattle Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Paris Opera and Glyndebourne Opera. A frequent recitalist, Mr. Gunn has been presented in recital at Alice Tully Hall by both Lincoln Center's Art of the Song series and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and by Carnegie Hall in Zankel Hall. He recently released a solo album, Just Before Sunrise, on the Sony BMG Masterworks label. Meet Me At the Pavilion

New in 2011, The Glimmerglass Festival will present Meet Me at the Pavilion, a series of special performances and lectures that will take place in the company’s Thaw Pavilion next to the Alice Busch Opera Theater. These performances will be presented all summer and will consist of concerts, lectures, post-performance discussions with cast and crew, and performances by members of the Young American Artists Program. Deborah Voigt, baritones Rod Gilfry and Nathan Gunn, the 2011 Young American Artists, and acclaimed composer and pianist John Musto will be involved in the summer series of special performances and concerts. Musto’s playing is featured in chamber music, concertos, solo works and song recitals. Soprano Amy Burton will also participate in the series in collaboration with Musto. Burton has frequently teamed with Musto for many performances, including concerts at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. She recorded Musto’s Quiet Songs, which was released in 2009 on Bridge Records. View the 2011 calendar.
