Letter to Ushers
May 1, 2008
Dear Friend,
Glimmerglass Opera’s 34th season is rapidly approaching, and we need your help! We are writing to ask you to join, or rejoin, our elite corps of volunteer ushers. If you are interested in volunteering for the 2007 Festival Season, please return the enclosed form by Wednesday, June 18th. Indicate which dates you wish to work, your station preference(s), which orientation session you will be attending, and if you would like to be a last-minute substitute. We always welcome new faces, so if you know of anyone who may be interested in being a volunteer usher, have them give us a call or send us an email.
There will be an orientation discussing the policies, procedures, and standards we expect ushers to follow while on duty at the Opera. The session will be approximately one hour long. You have the option of attending an orientation on either Saturday, June 20th at 3:00 pm or Tuesday, June 24th at 5:30 pm in the courtyard pavilion next to the theatre. Be sure to indicate which session you will be attending on your reply form. If you are unable to attend either session, please let us know so we can send you the handbook.
The following are the basic policies for ushering at Glimmerglass Opera. The Ushers’ Manual will be distributed at orientation with more specific information.
-Each usher is expected to arrive at least one hour and fifteen minutes before curtain time for sign in, a brush-up orientation, and preparation for the show.
-Each usher is expected to remain on duty until the end of the performance. Early departures may be arranged if cleared with the House Manager before the start of the show. We cannot be as lenient with lateness.
-Dress for ushers consists of a white shirt or blouse and black (or navy blue) trousers or skirt. Formal designs are more appropriate than sporty ones. Remember, the house is not climate controlled, so be prepared for inclement weather. Sweaters and vests should also be black, white, or navy blue.
-Since it may be difficult for younger persons to handle some of the problems that may arise, ushers must be at least 18 years old.
-Ushers are expected to uphold all rules discussed at orientation.
If you feel up for it, we’d love to have you with us this summer. Please completely fill out the enclosed form and return it to us by June 18th. If you cannot volunteer this year, please let us know if you wish to remain on our mailing list. There have been lots of changes on campus. Please note: the House Management office is now located across from the scene shop in the small trailer and our phone extension has changed. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or my Assistant House Manager, Brad Schiesser, at (607) 547-5704 ext. 261. Thank you! I look forward to seeing you!!!
All the best,
Kerryanne Kennedy
